How do you make decisions on what to buy? What influence does ‘Branding’ have? The impact of packaging, design and presentation. The differences between what you want and need. What is Brand Stretch? What are RFID tags used for? Will you buy imperfect fruit and veg? Additionally, an insight into some marketing techniques and how you can be a ‘savvy shopper’ when going to the supermarket, and much more.

This talk showcases quilts, wall hangings, and other textile art that makers create using new fabrics or transform from old textiles and items that some might call ‘rubbish’. In addition, it features a whole suitcase full of patchwork examples, ranging from classic patterns to modern, abstract designs, and including both hand and machine work, as well as patchwork created without measuring. Where appropriate, the talk can also include a live sewing machine demonstration of selected techniques and, if desired, can be developed into a practical workshop for sewers.

This frank talk reviews the impact of women’s menstrual cycles through the ages. Beginning with historical approaches and moving on to modern ways of managing this vital natural process. In doing so, it highlights how, until relatively recently, menstruation resulted in women having virtually no rights. Furthermore, the discussion explores differing cultural attitudes, the stigma and reality of period poverty. And the ways in which religions respond to menstruating women. Finally, it considers recent developments that are enabling girls in developing countries to continue their education.

This talk explores the history of underwear, illustrated with examples from different periods. In addition, it includes Victorian and Edwardian drawers, pantaloons, and combinations. As well as a selection of twentieth-century pieces such as stockings and suspenders, girdles, a bullet bra, a Liberty bodice, exotic knickers, and the modern waist cincher. Furthermore, for male audiences, it also includes examples of male underwear.

In this talk, you will take a look at how people have kept clean — or not — through the ages. To begin with, it considers the multitude of modern toiletries we use today; at the same time, it sets these in context. It then explores the history of everyday items such as the toothbrush, toilet paper, salt deodorant, and floating soap. Before going on to examine why soap is often more effective than detergent, even though, in practice, detergent is what most of us commonly use. Finally, it looks ahead to the possible demise of the modern toilet and, in conclusion, considers how safe sanitation can be delivered to the developing world.

How women have used cosmetics to enhance their appearance from ancient Egypt to modern day. Including numerous samples of the materials and chemicals used in the pursuit of beauty. You will see, just how much make-up can change a person’s appearance and chances in life.

Saffron –  Threads of Gold

This most expensive of spices has many diverse uses, from food flavouring and fragrance through dyeing, cosmetics and medicine. It has long been held in high esteem by royalty and aristocracy, from Ancient Egypt to modern times. Includes tasting samples of saffron infused in oil and in water.

Far from being just food, citrus fruit have played a significant role throughout history. In this talk, we explore their origins, uses, and, more broadly, their lasting impact on human culture, health, and well-being. Along the way, and by way of illustration, a series of intriguing citrus facts are revealed. Including, for example, how Paris was once saved from the plague by lemonade. Why oranges in classical paintings symbolised either wealth or prostitution, and why an aeroplane’s “black box” is, in fact, bright orange. Finally, the talk is illustrated with a carefully selected collection of antique citrus cooking utensils, bringing the subject vividly to life.

“A lot of research has gone into your talk as well as collecting interesting items. I didn’t wear a liberty bodice, but I did have to wear thick school PE knickers. All I can say is Thank Goodness for Marks and Spencer. Thank you for the trip down memory lane and for a well presented, interesting and enjoyable talk.”
